Can the PowerBox be mounted outdoors without a roof?
Short Answer: YES! Without Any Worry! ✅
One of the most common questions we receive from customers: "Can I install the PowerBox outdoors, without a roof? What if it rains or snows?"
The answer is simple: the PowerBox is fully suitable for outdoor installation – regardless of weather conditions. Rain, snow, frost, heat – the PowerBox can handle it all!
In this article, we will explain why PowerBox can work outdoors without a roof and what technologies make this possible.
PowerBox – Created for the Polish Climate
PowerBox was designed with the Polish climate in mind , which can be really demanding:
🌧️ Heavy rains – autumn and spring
❄️ Snow and frost – winter down to -30°C
☀️ Heatwave – summer up to +35°C
💨 Wind and storms – all year round
Therefore, the PowerBox can be mounted:
- ✅ On the building facade (without roof)
- ✅ On a parking pole (completely exposed)
- ✅ In the garage (indoor)
- ✅ Under a shelter (with partial protection)
- ✅ In the carport (with roof)
Wherever you need it – without compromise!
IP54 Protection Class – What Does It Mean?
Both PowerBox 11kW and PowerBox 22kW have IP54 protection class , which guarantees full resistance to external conditions.
What does IP54 mean?
IP = Ingress Protection
First digit (5) – Dust protection:
- ✅ Dustproof – dust does not penetrate the interior
- ✅ Sand protection – ideal for parking lots
- ✅ Protection against contamination – long service life
Second digit (4) – Water protection:
- ✅ Protection against water splashes – from all sides
- ✅ Protection against rain – even heavy rain!
- ✅ Snow protection – melting snow does not harm
What Does This Mean in Practice?
PowerBox can work in:
🌧️ Heavy rain - streams of water flow down the casing, the interior remains dry
❄️ Snow – snow falls on the housing, melts, water runs off – no problem
💦 Car wash – water splashes from the washer do not harm (although we do not recommend washing it on purpose!)
🌊 Floods – if the water does not completely cover it (IP54 does not protect against immersion)
PowerBox is like a smartphone with IP68 – only for charging stations! 📱💧
Temperature Range: -45°C to +55°C
PowerBox operates in extreme temperatures :
❄️ Winter: -45°C
✅ Electronics work – frost-resistant components
✅ The housing does not crack – materials resistant to low temperatures
✅ The cable remains flexible - special frost-resistant rubber
✅ Charging without problems – even at -30°C
Example:
Frost -25°C, snow falling, wind blowing – PowerBox charges your vehicle as if nothing had happened! ❄️⚡
☀️ Summer: +55°C
✅ Passive cooling – the housing dissipates heat
✅ Electronics don't overheat - industrial components
✅ Safe charging – even in direct sunlight
Example:
Heat +35°C, sun shining on the case, surface temperature +55°C – PowerBox charges without limits! ☀️⚡
Mechanical Resistance IK6
PowerBox also has a mechanical resistance class of IK6 :
🔨 Withstands impacts – energy of 1 J (like a hammer falling from 20 cm)
🏀 Vandalism protection – the casing is difficult to damage
🚗 Protection against accidental impacts – e.g. car doors
This means that PowerBox is really durable!
Charging in the Rain – Is It Safe?
YES! It's Completely Safe! ✅
Many customers are concerned: "Can I charge my vehicle in the rain? Isn't that dangerous?"
Answer: You can charge in any conditions – it is completely safe!
Why?
1. IP54 housing
- Water does not penetrate into the interior of the station
- The electronics are completely protected
- The connector has a protective cover
2. Type 2 Connector – Waterproof
- The Type 2 connector is designed for outdoor use.
- The contacts are protected against water
- Water flows down the plug housing
3. Electrical Protection
- Residual Current Device (RCD) – detects current leaks
- Galvanic isolation – circuit separation
- Automatic shutdown in case of a problem
You can safely connect the cable in heavy rain – it's safe! 🌧️⚡
Charging in Snow – Does It Work?
YES! PowerBox Works Even in the Snow! ❄️
What happens in winter:
- Snow falls on the casing - it melts from the heat of the electronics
- Water flows down the housing – thanks to IP54 it does not penetrate inside
- The connector stays dry – the cover protects the contacts
- Charging works normally - no restrictions
Example:
Snowstorm, -15°C, heavy snowfall – you plug in the cable, the PowerBox starts charging. The snow melts on the casing, water runs off. Everything works like summer! ❄️⚡
External vs. Internal Installation – Comparison
| Criterion | External Installation | Interior Installation (Garage) |
|---|---|---|
| Weather protection | IP54 – full protection | Not needed |
| Ventilation | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent | ⭐⭐⭐ Requires ventilation |
| Availability | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Always available | ⭐⭐⭐ You have to open the garage |
| Aesthetics | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Visible | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hidden |
| Installation cost | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lower | ⭐⭐⭐ Higher (wiring) |
| Vitality | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Years of work | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Years of work |
Verdict: Both solutions are equally good! The PowerBox works great both outdoors and indoors.
Most Common Concerns – We Dispel Doubts
❓ "Will rain damage electronics?"
NO. The IP54 housing protects the electronics from water. You can charge in heavy rain without worry.
❓ "Will the frost damage the station?"
NO. The PowerBox operates in temperatures down to -45°C. Polish frosts are a piece of cake for it!
❓ "Won't the sun overheat the station?"
NO. PowerBox operates in temperatures up to +55°C. Summer heat is no problem.
❓ "Won't someone steal the station?"
The PowerBox is permanently attached to a wall or pole. Additionally:
- RFiD authorization – no one will charge without a card
- Monitoring – camera directed at the station
- Insurance – in case of theft
❓ "Will water not flow into the connector?"
NO. The Type 2 connector has a protective cover. When the cable is connected, the connector is sealed.
❓ "Will snow block the connector?"
NO. Snow melts from the heat of the electronics. You can easily clear the snow from the connector before connecting the cable.
PowerBox Outdoor Maintenance
PowerBox requires minimal maintenance :
Every Month:
✅ Check if the connector is clean (wipe with a damp cloth)
